Havingabandoned previous hopes to expand Western Fair District, thecompany now plans to build a 9,290 square metre complex on a plot ofland along Wonderland Road South. Company executives say it willcreate 700 jobs and further boost the area’s thriving economy.

According to Gateway, if all goes as planned, the new StarlightCasino London will represent Gateway’s largest investment in Ontarioto date. In order to pull it off, however, the company needs a fewapprovals. Gateway has submitted a rezoning application for theproperty necessary to build the casino complex at 3334-3335Wonderland Road, situated between Wharncliffe Rd and Bradley Ave.
It’s a desirable location, no doubt, just up the road from a host ofbig-box retail stores and only 10 minutes from the intersection ofhighways 401 and 402; an area City Chamber of Commerce leader GerryMacartney called “the apex of the busiest trade corridor on theplanet”.
Macartney has been a longtime supporter of the London casino project,and is urging others to acquiesce to approval of the rezoningapplication. “It’s strategically important for them, and for us,”he said. The application will go before city council this summer, andif approved, construction could begin as early as September.
Carrie Kormos, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for Gateway Casinos, notes the size of this complex compared to the company’s smaller gambling destinations in Chatham, Clinton, Dresden and Woodstock. “We really envision London being the hub of the entertainment experience in Southwestern Ontario,” she said.
“Whether you’re looking for a night out of live entertainment ordining or gambling, we’re going to have lots of options to suit allof those tastes,” Kormos explains. “Many of our restaurants alsowill be family friendly, which we think is exciting.”

The current proposal encompasses a 9,290 square metres of floor space that will include a casino, live concert theatre and numerous restaurants. The casino will house 900 slot machines and 40 table games, and the restaurants are said to include the company’s signature brands, Atlas Steak + Fish, MATCH Eatery & Public House, The Buffet, and Nova Bar.
The only thing missing from the application is a 125-room hotel. That was part of the original 2017 proposal for the Western Fairgrounds expansion. With parties unable to come to agreeable negotiations on that project, the company threw in the towel and purchased property along Wonderland Road. Without a hotel and under 1,000 slot machines, the proposed complex won’t come anywhere close to Ontario, Canada’s largest casino, but it would be the largest this side of Niagara Falls.

Despite casinos being included in Stage 3 of the province's reopening plan, Gateway Casinos London won't be opening its doors Monday.
Rob Mitchell, director of communications and public affairs with Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Ltd., confirmed in an email that they currently have no set time for reopening any Gateway locations.
On Monday, Premier Doug Ford unveiled plans for Stage 3, which would see gathering limits increase to 50 people indoors and 100 people outdoors starting this Friday.

Under Phase 3 of Ontario's reopening plan, casinos will be allowed to reopen with some restrictions. Both table games and buffets will not be permitted.
“We have developed extensive health and safety plans for each site, which includes two metres physical distancing, rigorous cleaning and sanitation measures and the mandatory use of masks or face coverings for all individuals entering our gaming sites,” Mitchell said in an email.
Before the casino can reopen, Mitchell said the plans need to be independently reviewed by a health and safety expert and submitted to the regulator, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).

“We’re moving forward as a province, but we can’t stop. We won’t stop until we get every person in Ontario — until we get every worker in Ontario back to work and back on their feet. But today’s news is an important step forward,” Premier Doug Ford said during the announcement Monday.
Ford said the government will provide an update every Monday on regional reopenings.
Also reopening in Stage 3 are gyms, movie theatres, and playgrounds. Restaurants and bars are also allowed to open up inside in addition to the patios they were allowed to open in Stage 2.
