New Orleans, LA (May 11, 2013) – The final WSOP Circuit stop of the season rolled into New Orleans this week. This is the 20th WSOP Circuit location to host events. New Orleans has been the closing stop each and every season since the tournament series began back in 2005.
The third of 12 gold ring events attracted 163 players. The two-day $365 buy-in Pot-Limit Omaha tournament ended with the crowing of a new champion and a gold ring winner for the third time.
Ray Henson took the top spot, following a tough heads-up duel against William West, a local player from New Orleans who finished as the runner up. The champion earned $13,203 in prize money plus another coveted piece of jewelry.
Henson is a 35-year-old professional poker player from Houston. All three of his gold rings were won this season. The first victory took place at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles. Gold ring number two was earned at The Lodge in Colorado. This time, Henson collected a ring a bit closer to home.
Remarkably, this marked Henson's fifth time to cash on the WSOP Circuit, giving his proportionally the greatest number of wins to cashes among players with multiple rings. Moreover, he's cashed another 16 times at the WSOP in Las Vegas. His WSOP earnings alone now total close to $800,000.
Even more remarkable was the fact Henson almost did not enter this tournament. He signed up with seconds to go in registration and was even told that registration had closed at the time. But since Henson had come in line before the deadline, he arrived as the last entry. A day later, he had his third gold ring.
There were other notable developments from this tournament, as well.
Third-place finisher Shawn Daniels cashed for the 12th time in a WSOP Circuit event with this performance.
Tenth-place finisher Kenny Milam made his 15th career cash.
Two-time gold ing winner David “DC” Clark also made the money, his 27th career cash.
Also, gold ring winner Kat Bowen cashed for the 23rd time in her poker career, on her birthday, no less.
Ray Henson picked up 50 player points for his victory and is now tied for first place in the Casino Champion race. The top 18 finishers all received points.
The player who accumulates the most overall points in Harrah's New Orleans twelve combined gold ring tournaments will earn the title Casino Champion and shall receive automatic entry into the $1 Million 2012-13 WSOP National Championship Presented by Southern Comfort 100 Proof. The qualifier will join the winner of the $1,675 buy-in Main Event (My 17-20), who also wins an automatic seat.
All players who cash in gold ring events receive points that apply to both the Casino Championship race (good for Harrah's New Orleans gold ring events only) and the season-long race to claim one of the 60 at-large National Championship bids to be awarded to the top point earners throughout the season. More information on the points system is available on WSOP.com.
The 2012-13 WSOP Circuit at Harrah's New Orleans runs through May, 20 2013. This is to be followed by the third annual WSOP National Championship, also be be played here in New Orleans.
